Introduction

The text below was used to make the project known to all Electrical Engineering students that could sign-up at the start of the project, in March 2004. It is still published here to give the reader an idea of the efforts a participant has put in the project.

Would you like to spend tree weeks in one of the most beautiful and interesting countries of the world? Are you curious what the newest astonishing innovations in the field of Electrical Engineering are? Do you want to know more about the language and culture of a non-European country? And to have a great time with fellow students? Then read more about what study project Shouraizou can do for an Electrical Engineering student like you on the following pages.
What do we have to offer?
The study project can be divided into three parts: the research project, contract research and of course the study tour. You can find more information on each of the parts by following the links in the menu on the left.

Research project
The research consists of a theme-research on innovation in Japan and a country-reseach on the fascinating language, culture and society of Japan. We organize courses that will be awarded ECTS-points when you finish them. These points can be used in you Electrical Engineering curriculum. Major/minor students can finish an entire minor by following some additional courses!

One of the courses will be a unique language course, in which you will not only learn a surprising amount of Japanese, but also learn a lot about the special culture and social aspects in Japan. Other parts of the research project will most likely include a mini-symposium and domestic excursions. The larger part of the research project will take place in the 3rd trimester of this academic year.

Contract research
The purpose of contract research is to raise funds for the project and therefore it is compulsory for every participant to do such an assignment. The basic idea is that as a student, you are hired by a company or university for a fixed amount of time (in principle 120 hours) to do some literature research, design or implementation in an area of Electrical Engineering. In some cases it will be possible to be awarded ECTS-points. Most contract researches will take place before the study tour, some may be done afterwards.

The results of the research project and contract research will be (among others) published in 2 reports: one before the tour, the other afterwards.

Study tour
Finally, of course there’s the tour itself in November 2004. In approximately 3 weeks you will visit a large number of companies, institutes and universities in Japan, to see with your own eyes how people are innovating there. Besides that there’s plenty of time for cultural trips and other fun activities. We can already promise you in advance that you will have a couple of tiring, but great weeks. Moreover, you can choose to extend you stay in the Far East for a holiday.

What do we expect from you?
As you can see we have quite some things to offer you. Of course we do expect something in return, however. The most important thing is effort. We put much time and effort in the project and we expect you to contribute to the project with enthusiasm as well. This is the only way to make the project a success.

Time
Another important thing is time. You have to realize that the study tour itself is only the finishing part of the entire project and that there's much work to do beforehand. In the third trimester of this academic year, you will have to do 3,5 study points of work in the preliminary research (macro and meso-research). Create enough time for that in your time schedule! Just before and during the tour, you can earn another 3,5 study points with the final preparations and the tour itself (micro-research). Finally, you also have to do 120 hours of contract research, which is very important, because this provides the funds for the study project.

If you choose to follow the Japanese language courses (which are strongly recommended, but not compulsory) this will take a minimum of 2 study points. If you choose to do an entire 'minor', the total of study points will be 14. More information can be found here.

Costs
Although we try to raise as much funds as possible, the study project is not for free. We currently estimate that the costs per participant will be approximately EUR 950. For this fee, we will organize the larger part of the research project (the courses), you will receive the preliminary and final reports and of course you will visit Japan for ca. 3 weeks. All lodging and meals are included.

Demands
We also demand that you have already finished your propedeuse and D1-project at the start of the project. In this way, we are able to guarantee the companies a sufficient level for the contract researches. Only in very few situations we might drop this demand. For students that have been active in a student organizations like Scintilla, our university offers a special arrangement (the so called 'activisme-regeling'), which means that academic staff should help you with finishing courses without the regular examinations.
